SAN DIEGO -- Justin Upton lifted the Angels with both his bat and his glove on Monday, making a game-saving catch in left field and crushing a two-run home run to cap a four-run 10th inning that powered the Halos to a 6-3 win over the Padres in their series opener at Petco Park.
With the game tied, 2-2, in the 10th, the Angels mounted a rally against reliever Craig Stammen and scored the go-ahead run with the help of a communication breakdown in the Padres' outfield. With runners on first and second with one out, Kole Calhoun lifted a fly ball to right-center field that split outfielders Manuel Margot and Hunter Renfroe and bounced in for a ground-rule double that scored Eric Young Jr.
