Smith: Freeway Series finds Dodgers and Angels driving in opposite directions

They share a freeway, a somewhat overlapping Southern California market and, despite protests, the same city in their names.

But as the Angels and Dodgers open a three-game Freeway Series Monday at Angel Stadium, we’ll need more than Google Maps to see how these teams have grown more than 30 miles of often-gridlocked Interstate 5 apart.

These teams and, to some extent, these organizations have been heading in different directions for most of the season.

That’s despite both teams winning their 2014 divisional titles and each boasting a league Most Valuable Player in Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw and Angels centerfielder Mike Trout.
