SAN DIEGO – His seat in the Fox Sports San Diego broadcasting booth, perched behind the plate and five stories above the Petco Park field, was vacant before the past two Padres games.
His office, just down the hall, also has had its door closed and locked. It’s known as “the bunker” for its broom-closet-like dimensions, spartan décor and its windowless, flat-white walls that carry a few framed photos, including one of his boyhood idol, Ted Williams.
Legendary play-by-play announcer Dick Enberg wasn’t inside intensely studying, meticulously preparing and poring over a desktop of team media guides, the latest statistical printouts or his weathered scorebook as he has done before every ballgame since he first took the microphone for the Angels in 1968.
