Tyler Skaggs was a player the LA Angels always saw tremendous potential in. So much so that the Angels drafted Skaggs in the first round of the 2009 Supplemental Draft with the 40th pick overall. The Angels then traded him to the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011 for right-handed pitcher Dan Haren.
Skaggs pitched parts of two seasons in the majors with the Diamondbacks in 2012 and 2013, before the Angels reacquired him along with Hector Santiago for Mark Trumbo in the winter of 2013. Skaggs pitched well in 2014 until he succumbed to a torn UCL in his left elbow which required Tommy John Surgery putting Skaggs out until late 2016.
