Dan O’Brien, who was the Angels general manager from 1991-93, died Monday. He was 87.
News of O’Brien’s death was released Tuesday by the Seattle Mariners, for whom O’Brien served as both president and general manager earlier in his career.
O’Brien took over the Angels on May 1, 1991, after Mike Port was fired. O’Brien had spent two years working under Port in the Angels front office, following stints as GM of the Texas Rangers (1973-78) and Mariners (1981-83).
The most notable decision during O’Brien’s time as Angels GM was allowing Wally Joyner to leave as a free agent following the 1991 season.
