Final: Matt Shoemaker is strong again, but Angels drop pitchers' duel to A's

OAKLAND – The Angels haven’t had many games like this one.

In a season in which the offense has been better than expected and the injury-riddled pitching staff has been worse, the Angels flipped the script for one night.

Unfortunately for them, it was a still a loss.

Despite Matt Shoemaker’s solid start, and a game-tying rally in the ninth, the Angels lost 3-2 to the Oakland A’s on Friday night.

The A’s won it on Billy Burns’ two-out single in the bottom of the ninth. Fernando Salas had issued a two-out walk and then a Jake Smolinski single in front of Kole Calhoun, who was playing deep in a “no doubles” defense.
