BALTIMORE – If Joe Smith’s Angels career is winding down, he’s not finishing the way he would like.
Smith, who is a prime candidate to be traded before the Aug. 1 deadline, balked home the tying run in the seventh and gave up the go-ahead run in the eighth inning of the Angels’ 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles on Saturday.
Smith has allowed runs in three of his five outings since coming off the disabled list with a hamstring injury. For the season, he’s got a 4.80 ERA, uncharacteristic for a pitcher who has been one of baseball’s best setup men.
