Escobar exits after fouling Tanaka pitch off his face

ANAHEIM -- Angels third baseman Yunel Escobar was removed from Friday night's series opener against the Yankees in the bottom of the fourth inning after fouling a pitch off his face on a bunt attempt. He was replaced by Gregorio Petit.

Escobar squared to bunt against Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka leading off the fourth, fouling off an 0-1 pitch. The ball caromed off the bat and hit Escobar in the face, knocking off his helmet. He immediately headed into the Angels dugout as the training staff and manager Mike Scioscia came to check on him.
