Arte Moreno says Angels probably out on big name free agents

NEWPORT BEACH -- Angels fans hoping for a big free agent splash can just about stop hoping.

Owner Arte Moreno said Wednesday that the Angels have not seriously engaged any of the major free agents this winter and they aren’t planning to do so.

“Right now if I had to make the decision, we’d probably be out,” Moreno said.

Moreno spoke shortly after the Angels announced a $1.375 million deal with Daniel Nava, who gives them the other half a left-field platoon with Craig Gentry.

Although a Nava-Gentry platoon costs only $2.375 million, and certainly could be better than what the Angels got out of the position last year, it won’t do much to appease a frustrated fan base.
