The Angels traded infielder Taylor Featherston to the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday for a player to be named or cash considerations.
Featherston had been designated for assignment last week to make space on the 40-man roster for lefty Christian Friedrich.
Featherston, 26, hit .162 for the Angels last season. He remained on the roster all season because he had been picked in the Rule 5 draft. The Angels kept him, despite his lack of offensive production, because of his defense and because they believed he could one day develop into a better hitter.
This season the Angels could have optioned him, and they likely would have because they signed veteran Cliff Pennington to essentially fill the same role Featherston did in 2015.
