Angels thump Mariners behind Jesse Chavez, homer from C.J. Cron

THE GAME: Using a starting lineup with seven players who will be on the opening day roster, the Angels exploded for seven runs in the first three innings on the way to a 9-2 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday at Tempe Diablo Stadium.

PITCHING REPORT: RH Jesse Chavez gave up two runs, both on a homer by Tyler Smith, in four innings. He struck out three and walked none. Chavez is the leading candidate to win the Angels’ No. 5 starter job… RH Alex Meyer threw two scoreless innings, with two strikeouts and no walks, bouncing back nicely from his last outing, when he walked four and gave up three runs and didn’t last an inning.
