Angels squander opportunities, fall to Diamondbacks 3-2

/ STAFF WRITER

Angels pitcher Hector Santiago stands on the mound after giving up a home run to the Diamondbacks' Paul Goldschmidt, left, during the first inning.

PHOENIX – All they needed was a single. The Angels were down a run in Wednesday’s seventh inning at Chase Field, with runners on second and third and no outs.

Shortstop Erick Aybar stepped to the plate against Diamondbacks right-hander David Hernandez, who had permitted consecutive hits to Chris Iannetta and pinch-hitter Efren Navarro. A single would’ve flipped the game’s leader; a simple groundout would’ve tied it.
