ANAHEIM — Johnny Giavotella’s once-unexplained absence from the Angels’ stretch run has been explained and has proved to be more serious than initially portrayed.
On Aug. 21, the right-handed second baseman awoke experiencing double vision when looking left, making hitting impossible. He went to the hospital in “full panic mode.” Doctors examined him and worked their way through potential diagnoses. Multiple sclerosis was in play, then subsequently ruled out.
