ST. PETERSBURG, Fla – Kirk Nieuwenhuis was designated for assignment to make room for Kyle Kubitza, at least temporarily ending his short stint with the Angels.
Nieuwenhuis could clear waivers and be outrighted and stay in the Angels organization. The Angels could also trade or release him. He hit .136 in 10 games after the Angels acquired him from the New York Mets, who had designated him last month.
With Collin Cowgill on the disabled list with a sprained right wrist, Kole Calhoun is now the Angels backup center fielder. Calhoun hasn’t played center since he was at Triple-A.
