TEMPE, Ariz. — Yunel Escobar, who endured a harrowing trip in a 32-foot boat to defect from Cuba, is about to become a U.S. citizen.
Escobar was traveling to Miami on Wednesday to take a citizenship test on Thursday, Manager Mike Scioscia said. He is scheduled to rejoin the team Friday and play on Saturday.
“Especially with his background of how he got to this country, he feels connected with it and wants to become a U.S. citizen,” Manager Mike Scioscia.
