Matt Shoemaker, left, shown earlier in spring training with Ricky Nolasco, faced hitters on Wednesday. It was his first time facing hitters since his 2016 season was ended by a line drive to his head, requiring emergency surgery.

TEMPE, Ariz. — Matt Shoemaker stood on the mound on a practice field on Wednesday, a protective piece of plastic tucked into his cap, and he faced the final hurdle in his comeback from the horrific manner in which his 2016 season ended.

Shoemaker unleashed a pitch. Shane Robinson hit it back up the middle, bouncing it just past the dirt of the mound.
