LOS ANGELES — Garrett Richards, the Angels’ ace who is out indefinitely with a torn ulnar collateral ligament, will not undergo Tommy John surgery in the near future as previously expected.
Richards received a stem cell injection Monday afternoon, the club confirmed, in the hope of avoiding the procedure.
Angels general manager Billy Eppler said Richards would be evaluated in six weeks.
It leaves open the possibility that Richards could pitch again this season.
“It’s done just in hopes of having the best outcome of having him be healthy,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said.
