Angels extend to the limit to sign draft pick Jack Kruger

The Angels signed Mississippi State catcher Jack Kruger, a 20th-round pick, to a $395,000 bonus on Friday, the deadline for inking 2016 draft picks.

The Angels ended up signing 35 of their 40 picks, pushing their spending nearly to the limit they could extend without sacrificing any future draft picks.

Any money over $100,000 that teams give to draft picks beyond the 10th round count against their bonus pool, so Kruger’s deal pushed the Angels just shy of 5 percent over their allotment. At 5 percent, teams forfeit their first-round pick in the next year.

The Angels had an allotment of $6,120,500 for their top 10 picks, plus overages on picks beyond that.
