Angels designate Espinosa for assignment

The Angels designated second baseman Danny Espinosa for assignment Sunday, making room on the active roster for right-hander Parker Bridwell, who was called up to start Sunday afternoon's matchup against the Rays in Anaheim.

The Angels acquired Espinosa in a trade with the Nationals in December in exchange for Minor Leaguers Austin Adams and Kyle McGowin, but he's struggled at the plate since joining his hometown team.

Espinosa is hitting just .162/.237/.276 with 14 extra-base hits (six homers) and 29 RBIs through 77 games with the Angels.

Bridwell, meanwhile, was recalled from Salt Lake on Sunday to rejoin the Los Angeles rotation.
