20 years later, Tim Salmon remembers Angels part in Cal Ripken Jr.'s record-breaking night

ANAHEIM – Long before Tim Salmon had experienced what it meant to be in the World Series, he got a taste of it on a September night in Baltimore.

Salmon and the Angels were the opponents the night that Cal Ripken Jr. played in his 2,131nd consecutive game, breaking Lou Gehrig’s record. It was Sept. 6, 1995, 20 years ago Sunday.

“It was a World Series atmosphere,” Salmon said Sunday. “It was almost mystical. It was a playoff atmosphere. The president was there. You could see sharpshooters on the rooftops. It was like a movie. It was the biggest game in the world.
