Jurgen Klopp was flummoxed by Gareth Southgate’s decision to play Trent Alexander-Arnold as a midfielder and questioned the wisdom of diluting his right-back’s qualities.
Alexander-Arnold, whom Klopp believes is the best in the world in his position, was moved into midfield for England’s procession against Andorra last Sunday but, after an awkward 45 minutes, he was switched back to a more familiar role. Southgate conceded the Liverpool star was 'happier' once that change had been made.
The 22-year-old has many outstanding qualities and regularly stamps his presence on games from out wide but Klopp was bewildered to see Alexander-Arnold alongside Jordan Henderson and Jude Bellingham, even though Southgate insisted it was a worthwhile experiment.
