‘Late’ is one way of describing Vinnie Jones’ tackle on Steve McMahon during the 1988 FA Cup final.
The game was minutes old when the Wimbledon midfielder decided to send his Liverpool counterpart into orbit with a reducer.
“I’d watched a video and [Alan] Hansen or someone would knock the ball to [McMahon] who’d then let it come across him to open up so he could play it out the other side," he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast on talkSPORT.
“The boys knew I was going to smash him because I’d told them that if I could early enough, the referee wasn’t going to send me off in front of in front of about 100,000 people, but I didn’t get too much of a response from the lads, so it was a bit of a gamble!
