VAR the joy killer: Premier League accused of changing the rules with clear and obvious error bar lowered as Liverpool players call for VAR to be scrapped following late controversy at Brighton

The Premier League was accused of changing the VAR rules after another day of huge controversy which saw Liverpool denied victory by a contentious late penalty.

Former official and BT Sport pundit Peter Walton said he thinks referees chief Mike Riley has ‘lowered the bar’ for what constitutes a clear and obvious error after VAR intervened for a foul by Andy Robertson on Brighton striker Danny Welbeck.

The decision led Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to call for VAR to be scrapped and claimed it is ruining the game.
