Many moons ago I was one of a handful of Liverpool supporters given an opportunity to speak with then Chief Executive Rick Parry about plans for a new stadium. One of the questions put to Parry was whether the club would be open to the idea of naming stands in the "New Anfield" after legendary figures from the club's illustrious past. Men such as Bill Shankly, Bob Paisley and Kenny Dalglish.
Parry was not keen on the idea, explaining that as there are only four stands, by committing to names from the past you are not leaving yourself any scope to do something similar should any other iconic figures emerge in the future.
