Roma 'line up £4m swoop for Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren if Italian giants cannot make Chris Smalling's loan move from Manchester United permanent'

Roma have identified Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren as a potential target if they are unable to keep Manchester United star Chris Smalling for another season.

The Serie A giants are attempting to tie down Smalling's future to the club after a string of impressive performances from the England international - but are also preparing to look elsewhere.

Smalling has spent the season on loan at the Stadio Olimpico, and La Gazzetta dello Sport suggest he may be replaced by Lovren this summer.

Lovren has struggled for game time at Liverpool in recent months and may be tempted to make the move to the Italian capital in search of regular first-team action.
