Premier League managers look set to re-ignite the fierce debate over whether to allow five substitutions in a match after the International Football Association Board (IFAB) agreed to extend the temporary rule until 31 December 2022.
Almost all major European leagues employed the measure, which was introduced in May last year to help clubs and players cope with the extraordinary demands of the football schedule because of the coronavirus pandemic.
IFAB announced on Friday that following an internal meeting, the temporary amendment to the rule, which 'affords competition organisers the option of allowing teams' five substitutes per match instead of three, will be extended for another 19 months.
