FWA chairman Patrick Barclay praised Salah's performances and said the race was a tight one between the Liverpool man and Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne:
"It's been the tightest call since 1968/69, when there was a dead heat between Tony Book of Manchester City and Derby [County]'s Dave Mackay.
