Liverpool youngster Harvey Elliott suffers gruesome ankle injury after strong challenge from Pascal Struijk... but Gary Neville insists referee Craig Pawson was WRONG to send the Leeds defender off

Liverpool wonderkid Harvey Elliott suffered an horrific ankle injury to overshadow his side's 3-0 win at Leeds United on Sunday night.

Elliott was injured after a strong challenge from Leeds defender Pascal Struijk, who was shown a straight red card by referee Craig Pawson.

Around the hour mark in the side's clash at Elland Road, substitute Struijk slid into challenge the 18-year-old as he broke away. The Dutchman came in from the side and won the ball, but landed his full bodyweight on the lower part of Elliott's leg, which buckled gruesomely.

Sky Sports did not show a replay of the challenge due the graphic nature of the injury, while Elliott was taken to hospital after being treated for several minutes as players from both teams waited anxiously on the pitch.
