Liverpool supporters have voted by a huge majority of 88 per cent in favour of safe standing, in an extraordinary poll turn-out which saw nearly 18,000 cast votes.
The Spirit of Shankly organisation, which coordinated the poll in a city where a return to standing remains a deeply sensitive subject, said on Monday that the result was 'a significant step' in the campaign for the introduction of 'rail seats' which can be locked back, allowing fans to stand.
A total of 17,910 people voted online – vastly more than SoS had expected – and 15,798 – or 88.
