The Cazoo Derby dream for a clutch of past and present Liverpool players is over after Mr McCann finished fifth in the Dee Stakes at Chester but they will now chase more European glory.
Trainer Hugo Palmer said Mr McCann, who is owned by a syndicate comprising Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold plus former teammate Adam Lallana, will drop back to a mile and contest the German 2,000 Guineas later this month after failing to stay the 1m 2f distance of the Dee Stakes.
Palmer said: 'He travelled well and had a shout for a moment but he was a non-stayer.
