Liverpool confirm plans to leave Melwood and redevelop Kirkby youth academy into £50m complex

Liverpool have confirmed plans to leave their historic Melwood training base and transform their Kirkby Academy into a £50million state-of-the-art complex for both the first team and youth set-ups.

Melwood has been Liverpool's training base since the 1950s but under the plans announced on Wednesday, it will be sold off for 160 family homes.

Liverpool intend to purchase 14 acres of land at Simonswood playing fields at the rear of the Kirkby Academy to expand the current site to around 60 acres and hope to have the work completed by 2019.
