Liverpool are in advanced talks to make Jorg Schmadtke their new sporting director and want him in place for the start of the summer transfer window.
It has long been a source of speculation over who will replace Julian Ward, the current incumbent, since he stated his intention to step down last November.
Liverpool had been linked with a number of candidates, including Paul Mitchell, who is currently with Monaco.
But Schmadtke, 59, a well-respected figure within German football, received a solid recommendation from manager Jurgen Klopp during discussions with club owners Fenway Sports Group and is now heading to the formalities of a contract.
