Goalscoring hero at Wembley and probably on his way to the 2018 World Cup – no wonder Iago Aspas was calling it the happiest day of his career. It certainly wasn’t on the cards when he left Liverpool having flopped under Brendan Rodgers in the 2013-14 season.
‘It’s not everyday you make your debut,’ he said with a typical ‘Aspasism’, before adding: ‘To do so at Wembley and score is unbeatable. Despite being 2-0 down we kept on fighting and in the end we salvaged something from the game.’
Asked if it was even sweeter because it was on English soil he said: ‘It was a difficult year but scoring here makes up for it, now I’m dreaming of going to Russia.
