Harry Kewell has backed Gerard Houllier's claim that he did not need to sign Cristiano Ronaldo back in 2003 because he already had the Australian international.
Liverpool famously passed up on the opportunity to sign the Portugal superstar when he was 18, instead watching as he moved to Manchester United for £12m and went on to win three Premier League titles, the Champions League and become the most expensive player in the world at Real Madrid.
The Reds, who had already signed teenage French duo Anthony Le Tallec and Florent Sinama-Pongolle in that window, did not have the budget to afford Ronaldo.
