Graham Taylor, 1944-2017 – 'His defence of John Barnes to a hostile fan at Wembley was typical of the man'

Graham Taylor's death at the age of 72 led to an outpouring of tributes to the former England manager, who was renowned as one of the nicest men in the game.

A big success in club football with Watford, Aston Villa and Lincoln City, Taylor's time as national team boss encompassed the 1992 European Championship and 1994 World Cup qualifying.

His career in the professional game began as a player with Grimsby Town, where he played for six years before a four-year spell with Lincoln, where he took his first job in management at the age of just 28 in 1972.
