Joe Gomez will battle to prove his fitness in time for the European Championships - but the likelihood of the Liverpool defender regaining his fitness in time appears remote.
But his likely absence could open the door to another centre-back in time for next summer’s tournament.
Speaking following Thursday’s win over the Republic of Ireland, manager Gareth Southgate said: ‘We have been very pleased with the centre-backs that are with us now.
‘I talked a little bit about Conor [Coady] and the impact he has had but there are some other good centre-backs in the league and we are always monitoring and assessing what the batting order should be.
