Jack Wilshere has withdrawn from the England squad and will not be available for Tuesday’s friendly against Italy, while Joe Gomez is a doubt.
Wilshere was in line to start against the Netherlands, only to stay in the UK after complaining of pain in his knee during training on the eve of the game
Friday's 1-0 victory over the Dutch would have been his first start since the Euro 2016 exit to Iceland and Southgate had hoped to have the Arsenal man available to face the Azzurri.
But the Football Association has now announced the midfielder has left the squad due to the problem and has returned to his club.
