Danny Ings inches closer to first-team return with Liverpool as he misses 2-0 U23 derby win over Everton to train at Melwood ahead of Tottenham clash

Danny Ings was left out of Liverpool's Under-23 squad for their derby clash with Everton, paving the way for a return to senior action with the Anfield club.

Former Burnley striker Ings, still just 24, was ruled out for most of last season after suffering a serious cruciate knee ligament injury. He's had to bide his time in the current campaign, but the fact he missed his team's 2-0 win on Sunday indicates he's now close to first-team football with Jurgen Klopp's senior side.

Ings could now feature for the Merseyside giants in their EFL Cup fourth-round tie with Tottenham at Anfield on Tuesday night, a chance he'll be determined to take should he be offered the chance to be involved.
