City council to investigate impact of staging Liverpool's Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid on spreading coronavirus in the UK

Liverpool's Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid will be investigated by the city council over concerns it led to a high number of coronavirus infections in the area.

The game, held on March 11, was attended by 52,000 supporters and within 10 days the UK government had banned sporting events in a bid to stop the spread of the virus.

After calls from Liverpool City Region mayor Steve Rotherham for an enquiry, mayor John Anderson commissioned an enquiry, in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University, to establish the impact that staging the game had.
