BREAKING NEWS: Football star Jon Flanagan avoids jail over 'prolonged' late-night street attack when he repeatedly beat and kicked his mother-of-two girlfriend

Liverpool FC footballer Jon Flanagan has avoided jail over a 'prolonged' late-night street attack when he repeatedly beat and kicked his girlfriend.

The 25-year-old defender, who pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to assault by beating of Rachael Wall.

At Liverpool Magistrates' Court this morning, he was handed a 12-month community order and asked to complete 40 hours of unpaid work.

Flanagan, from Liverpool, who earns £35,000 a week, was also ordered to pay £85 court costs and £85 victim surcharge by Judge Wendy Lloyd.

Wearing a black suit, white shirt and black tie, Flanagan looked nervous as he was sentenced.
