Like City, Newcastle is a club of modest beginnings.
They were founded in 1892 when rivals Newcastle East End and Newcastle West End merged in the Northern League - now the ninth tier.
After twice being refused entry to the First Division, Newcastle joined the second tier - with Liverpool and Woolwich Arsenal- before reaching the top flight for the first time in 1898.
