The Raiders have waived/injured 2017 second-round pick Obi Melifonwu as a corresponding move to signing veteran cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, the team announced Thursday afternoon.
Melifonwu had battled injuries since being drafted, playing only five games as a rookie and missing the last couple weeks of this preseason. He spent 10 weeks on injured reserve due to knee and hip injuries last season. Jon Gruden has repeatedly said that Melifonwu was being evaluated, but never providing a concrete timetable for his return.
On Monday, Gruden was asked if he had an idea of where Melifonwu stood in that evaluation.
