Raiders’ top pick Joseph will open season as backup

The first indication that something was going on at the safety spot came in the Raiders’ final preseason game Thursday night. Nate Allen was wearing a baseball cap, watching the game along with the rest of the starters.

And while the depth chart issued by the team Tuesday isn’t worth much more than the paper it’s printed on, Allen was listed as the starting strong safety ahead of first-round pick Karl Joseph.

“I don’t know what’s going on with that,” Allen said. “I am just trying to get ready for the Saints, and we’ll let everything else just fall into place whether it be starting on defense or on special teams.
