Raiders QB Derek Carr: `I never chased the money’

ALAMEDA — Derek Carr, the Raiders’ $125 million man, believe his newfound wealth was attained because it was never about the dollars.

“I never chased the money,” Carr said Friday at a press conference announcing his five-year contract extension. “It’s about being the best version of myself every day. If I can get even one kid to understand that, I’ve done my job.”

Carr was joined by Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie in a news conference that was televised live on both ESPN and the NFL Network.

The NFL’s highest paid player in terms of average salary at $25 million per year, Carr said his priority wasn’t necessarily getting the top dollar figure but making sure there will be money left under the salary cap to extend fellow veteran players such as defensive end Khalil Mack and guard Gabe Jackson.
