One day last year, Jack Squirek heard a knock on the front door of his suburban Cleveland home. The man at the door, a stockbroker from New York, also was an autograph collector.
He came equipped with the Sports Illustrated cover of Jan. 30, 1984 — showing Squirek holding a football aloft as he strolled into the end zone in Super Bowl XVIII.
“It’s kind of nice to be remembered,” he said of the distinctive autograph request. “If I didn’t make a play in the Super Bowl, nobody would remember me.”
Few sports fans probably would.
