Raiders’ Darren Waller works toward sobriety and chance at stardom

ALAMEDA — In “Unguarded,” the powerful ESPN 30 for 30 documentary about basketball player Chris Herren and his addiction to drugs and alcohol, there’s a passage where Herren explains that he always shaved in the shower.

Once he got sober, Herren realized why. Herren simply could not look at himself in the mirror because of the life he was living and the people he had hurt.

I relayed that story Friday to Raiders tight end Darren Waller, who grew quiet for a second, then said, “Wow. That’s powerful.”

Waller, whose own life has included a cycle of drugs and alcohol starting at age 16, can relate.
