Raider got Hall of Famer Tim Brown because Hall of Famer Ron Wolf couldn’t make deal for Paul Gruber

Ron Wolf’s inability to execute the wishes of Al Davis led to the selection of Tim Brown in the 1988 NFL draft.

Davis had his eye on Wisconsin guard Paul Gruber and instructed Wolf to make a deal to make sure it happened. The Raiders had the sixth and ninth picks in the draft, but Wolf couldn’t find a deal to his liking and Tampa Bay took Gruber at No. 4.

“We were trying our darndest to wove up and take Paul Gruber and could never get there,” Wolf told reporters on a conference call Tuesday. “Al was not in the room when we picked Tim Brown.
