McKenzie views Aldon Smith as part of long-term plans; Ball injury not season-ending; Allen returns to practice

ALAMEDA — Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie acknowledged the team had concerns about Aldon Smith’s off the field issues when they signed him, but believes the troubled former 49er is fitting in well with the team.
“Going in, we did a lot of research on that,” McKenzie said of Smith on Tuesday in his first meeting with the media since signing him two days before the Raiders’ season opener.
“At the end of the day when we said we were going to go ahead and go after him, we just wanted to let him join the family and help him every kind of way we can, which is what we’re doing.
