OAKLAND — Jon Gruden had never set foot in the Coliseum until Week 4 of the 1995 season as the first-year offensive coordinator of the Philadelphia Eagles.
Gruden, who was 31 and looked 21, had his first conversation with owner Al Davis. What did Davis say to the kid coach he would eventually hire to lead the Raiders in 1998?
“Are you the coordinator?,” Gruden said in his best Davis accent Friday. “You look like the paperboy.”
The Eagles jumped out to a 17-0 lead, with the Raiders in their second regular season home game back in Oakland reeling off the next 48 points to win 48-17.
