LEXINGTON – There are worse situations for a first-time head coach to walk into less than a month before a season opener.
Former assistant coach Kyra Elzy was promoted to interim head coach for the Kentucky women’s basketball program on Nov. 13, just 12 days before the Wildcats’ season opener against Murray State. Elzy had been leading the program throughout the summer as former head coach Matthew Mitchell was rehabbing from brain surgery, but Mitchell’s abrupt retirement still came as a surprise.
Luckily for Elzy, Kentucky has perhaps the best player in the country in junior guard Rhyne Howard.
